Gemini Tip
Your Team Keeps Asking How Much Error Budget Is Left? Build the Calculator in Gemini Canvas and Export It to Google Sites.
By Steven Sorensen · 27 Oct 2026

At a glance
- Build a small, self-contained team tool in Gemini Canvas, like an error budget calculator, and test it in the preview and console first.
- Select Export, then Google Sites, so the app lands in a new private Sites draft instead of behind a public share link.
- Publish the site as Restricted to your team, and keep the Gemini chat as the place you make changes.
Every Monday someone asks how much error budget is left this month, and someone opens a spreadsheet and pastes a number that is stale by Tuesday. A tiny calculator would fix it, but nobody wants hosting, a repo, and a deploy pipeline for forty lines of JavaScript.
Who gets it: Google's 19 October 2026 Workspace Updates post says export to Google Sites is available now on web, Android, and iOS for Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google accounts that have access to the Gemini app. On work accounts, Google Sites must be turned on for you and you must be allowed to create sites.
Why it matters
Until now, sharing a Canvas app meant a public g.co/gemini/share link or copying the code into a Sites embed block by hand. Google's Workspace Updates post says you can now select Export, then Google Sites, on an interactive app in the Gemini app, and it opens as a new, private site draft that stays fully interactive. You add context around it, publish, and share it like any other Google Site.
For a dev team, that is the missing step between "I prototyped it in chat" and "the team actually uses it." The tool lives on a page colleagues can bookmark, and you never touch hosting.
How to ship an error budget calculator to your team's Google Site
- Go to gemini.google.com, sign in with the account that should own the site, and select Canvas below the text box.
- Describe the app. The block below is our example. Swap in your own SLO targets and fields.
- Test it in the Canvas preview with last month's real numbers. Help says Code opens the source for direct edits, Show console finds errors and logs, and Show recent changes shows what Gemini edited.
- Fix problems by asking in the chat, or select Select and ask, highlight the part of the app that is wrong, and describe the fix.
- When the math checks out, select Export, then Google Sites, on the interactive app. The app opens in Google Sites as a new private draft.
- In Sites, add a short text block above the app: which SLO it covers, where the numbers come from, and who owns it.
- Select Preview to check the layout, then Publish and pick a web address.
- Select Share and set the published site to Restricted, then add your team or a Google Group as viewers. Work accounts may see organization-wide options instead.
Build an interactive error budget calculator as a single self-contained page.
Inputs: SLO target as a percentage (default 99.9), window length in days (default 30), total requests so far, failed requests so far, days elapsed.
Show: allowed failures for the full window, failures used, budget remaining as a count and a percentage, current burn rate, and the projected day the budget runs out at that rate.
Color the remaining budget green above 50 percent, amber from 20 to 50, red below 20.
Plain styling, no external fonts or libraries, no sign in, no saved data.
Add a short "How this is calculated" section under the results.
Gotchas
- Use your work account: Google says exported sites follow your organization's existing Sites and Drive policies, so build team tools while signed in to Gemini with your work account.
- Self-contained works best: our example asks for no external libraries and no saved data. Google's post does not say whether apps that use Gemini-powered features or save data across sessions behave the same once embedded in Sites, so test the draft before you publish.
- Help lags the launch: the Canvas Help page still lists only Docs, Slides, PDF, Colab, and copy under export, with no Google Sites option yet. Follow the Workspace Updates post for the menu path.
- Public links are different: Help says anyone with a public Canvas share link can view and edit data associated with the app. For internal tools, use the Sites export and a Restricted site instead.
- Desktop app: the post lists web, Android, and iOS only, so use gemini.google.com if the Windows or macOS app lacks the option.
- Check the math: this is AI generated code. Verify the outputs against a manual calculation before your team relies on it.

Recommended AI prompt
Copy this paragraph into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, or whatever AI you use.
I want to build a small internal tool in Gemini Canvas and publish it to my team's Google Site using Export, then Google Sites. Ask me what question my team keeps asking, which numbers they type in, and who should be able to see the page. Then write a short Canvas prompt for a single self-contained page with no external libraries and no saved data, plus a checklist I can use before publishing: test inputs with known answers, edge cases like zero or negative values, what to write above the app on the site, and the sharing setting to choose. Do not invent Gemini or Google Sites menus or settings I did not mention.
